Miss AfriCanada 2011 Jessica Acquaye

My name is Jessica Acquaye and I am a 20 year old student of Ghanaian descent. I am currently entering my fourth year at the University of Toronto, where I am majoring in Kinesiology and Physical Health and Education. I am readily involved in any community that I find myself in stemming from high school where I was vice-president of student council, co-creator of the Black History Month committee and valedictorian, extending to my post-secondary years where I hold memberships to various student governing councils. These student governing bodies include the Physical Health and Education Association, the Council of Athletics and Recreation, the University of Toronto Student’s Union and the Interprofessional Health Science Association. Additionally, I aided in the co-creation of the first Black History Month committee in the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, where we organized events to not only raise awareness of the vast contributions that Black people have made to Canadian society but also raise funds for causes such as Haiti Relief and the U of T Summer Mentorship Program. I not only strive for excellence in my involvement with my community, but also as it pertains to my academic merit. I am a recipient of several national and faculty appointed scholarships and awards including a BBPA (Black Business Professional Association) national scholarship, a PHE Alumni Leadership scholarship, the Beverly Vickers’s award and the Dean’s Student leadership Award. I joined this pageant to continue to raise awareness of the impact that African Canadians elicit on our society through the exemplification of black beauty, talent, eloquence and intellect and would use Miss AfriCanada as a platform to further advance and expand African heritage initiatives outside the confines of my university campus.Specifically I desire to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle to African Canadian youth who reside in low-income areas, and often lack the information and resources necessary to engage in a purposefully active lifestyle.
