Miss AfriCanada 2010 Maya Mboup from Senegal
My title as Miss AfriCanada heightened my ability to inspire those around me and work towards making a difference in the world. My mission during my term was to empower youth, promote the values of education, and help bridge the digital divide for the economical advancement of African nations.
As Miss AfriCanada 2010, I not only focused on my own non for profit orrganization, Initiatives A Plus, but I also advocated for other non for profits such as Covenant House Toronto, Because I’m A Girl, Opportunity International, AIESEC, UNICEF Canada, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Toronto, The Southern African Chamber of Business, The Sick Kids Foundation, United Way, among other commendable institutions. I applaud the work these organizations are doing towards the betterment of the lives of many around the world. I gave free violin lessons to youth in the community and taught them the benefits of playing a musical instrument, which gave me one on one interaction with the younger members of my generation.I acquired the passion for giving back to my community at a very young age, prior to becoming Miss AfriCanada. This passion will continue to be a part of my identity and I will ensure my philanthropic ideologies will help those in need through out my life.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors and Organizers of the Miss AfriCanada pageant for giving young ladies of African descent the platform to share and celebrate the beauty of their heritage. You have done an amazing job in instilling self confidence and values in young women, and allowing the community to get together and celebrate our rich and beautiful culture.
